What Is Welfare?

Welfare refers to a variety of government initiatives that assist individuals or groups that are unable to maintain themselves financially or otherwise. Taxpayers generally finance welfare programs, which help people cope with financial hardship at difficult times in their life. People who receive welfare usually get a biweekly or monthly stipend. The aims of welfare differ, but they always aim to encourage people to pursue jobs, education, or, in certain cases, a higher level of living.
