What Is the Social Security Administration (SSA)?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is a federal government organization that oversees disability, retirement, and survivor payments in the United States. President Franklin D. Roosevelt established it in 1935. The SSA has been a completely autonomous agency since 1994, when it was formerly part of the Department of Health and Human Services.
