What are the various sections in GMAT exam?

To conquer a land, one should first have the map. Knowing the format of an exam is the first step to beat the exam barrier. GMAT has various sections to examine the test taker’s understanding as any other paper. The sections gauge the ability of critical thinking, problem analysis, and problem solving skills, which are regularly presented in business management programs. The varied sections along with their details are mentioned below.

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)

The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) consists of one essay question for which you have 30 minutes to write it. The score range is between zero to 6 points assessed both by the computer assessment and a human examiner from GMAT council or university qualified faculty members.

In this section, an argument is given in which the critique shall be done using the evidence and facts from the given excerpt, evaluating the author’s reasoning. This section tests the applicant’s ability to analyze information and logically organize the arguments using evidence. The score of this section is taken separately from the total score.

Integrated Reasoning (IR)

The Integrated Reasoning (IR) section gauges the applicant’s ability to evaluate and coherently analyze data presented in various formats like tables, graphs, etc. It includes multi-score reasoning, graphs interpretation, two-part analysis and table analysis. A 30 minutes section, the applicant must complete 12 multi-part questions, including fill-in blanks, table completion, etc. There is no go-back option in this section, and applicants should remember that answer alternatives for one question won’t help them solve other questions in succession. The score ranges from 1 to 8 points, taken separate from the total score

Quantitative

The arithmetic/maths section is referred as the Quant section. This section has two types of questions: problem-solving and data sufficiency. The topics which come under this section are arithmetic, algebra and geometry.

Arithmetic includes number systems & theory, fractions, decimals, percentages, profit loss, speed and distance, ratio & proportion, sets, probability, etc. Algebra’s subtopics include Algebraic expressions and equations, Functions, Exponents, Arithmetic & Geometric Progression, Quadratic Equations and Inequalities, and Basic statistics. Geometry has Lines and Angles, Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Rectangular solids and Cylinders, Polygons, Coordinate geometry, etc. There is no calculator provided for this section.

To analyze whether enough data is provided and identify the important information to deduce the answer within the timeframe of 62 mins. There are total of 31 MCQ type questions with a score range of 6 to 51 points.

Verbal

The Verbal Reasoning section tests critical reasoning, sentence correction, and reading comprehension. The applicant is required to evaluate different arguments for specific questions. Evidence-linked logical conclusions is the paramount requirement of this section. Also, understanding the author’s tone, their perspective, summarizing ideas, and creating conclusions backed by evidence in text. This section includes 36 MCQ questions with a timeframe of 65 minutes. the score in this section ranges from 6-51 points.
