A high-performing employee has recently been under-performing. How would you deal with the situation?

As a manager, I would try to understand the reason for the dip in performance.

If it is a controllable (employee unsatisfied with the job, pay, etc.), then I would try to understand the issue and do my best to solve it.

If it is an uncontrollable (family issues, other distractions), then I would counsel the employee and explain the need to focus on work.

At the end of the day, it is important to be empathetic towards the employee and try to improve the employee’s performance. Motivation and a helping hand go a long way in achieving that.
