What is ODS?

  • An operational data store (ODS) is a database that combines data from several sources in order to perform extra operations on it. The data is not transmitted back to operational systems, unlike a master data store. It may be sent on for additional processing and reporting to the Data Warehouse.

  • Data may be cleaned, redundancy addressed, and compliance with the appropriate business rules evaluated in ODS. This data store may be used to integrate heterogeneous data from many sources in order to conduct corporate operations, analysis, and reporting. Before being moved to the Data Warehouse for longer-term storage or archiving, this is where the majority of the data utilised in the current activity is stored.

  • An ODS is intended for relatively simple inquiries on modest quantities of data (such as determining the status of a client order), rather than the sophisticated queries on massive amounts of data that the Data Warehouse is built for.

  • An ODS is comparable to short-term memory in that it only remembers information that is current. The Data Warehouse, on the other hand, functions more like long-term memory, keeping information that is quite permanent.
