What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean Manufacturing is the method of production that is based on increasing the productivity in the production process while reducing waste in the same. The Lean concept defines waste as anything that the end customer is not willing to pay for. It can consist of a process, activity, or any service that the client is not willing to pay for. Hence, all such wastes should be minimized as it leads to a waste of time, money, and skills of the human resources employed. Even idle time or any excess inventory is something that this production method aims at eliminating to reduce inefficient procedures. It aims at reducing lead times and the cost of operation to increase product quality.
This production method which has influenced production methods across industries and improved manufacturing systems around the world is based on a set of principles. This method has been replicated in healthcare, software, and other service industries.
