What is federated cloud computing?

Federated cloud computing is where you have multiple Cloud Service Providers operating together in a federation. Exactly what that means will vary, but it can often mean that customers of one cloud service can use their credentials from that service, and perhaps some of their data, to make use of another cloud service without having to sign in separately.

For example, if you use your Facebook or Google username and password to access a different cloud service, that would be a federated system. Other types of federation are possible.
