A business analyst is a person who analyses the key problems a business face; and then try to derive insights from the underlying data to correspond to the particular problem. Therefore, a business analyst needs to have a perfect mix of software & technical skills as well as business understanding to link data trends & patterns to the business problem and present the key findings to business stakeholders. Generally, business analysts work in the mid-way between business managers and data analysts.

A Business Analyst (for IT) seeks to conceive, improve, adapt or expand systems so that their ability to survive and prosper increases (the company itself is a system). The system should solve problems and/or create value for customers. It has to becomes more efficient and manageable and must be better integrated in and accepted by its environment. There are more aspects than these that tend to increase the chances for a longer lifespan.

The BA for IT studies systems and their environment. Although, (s)he can study them from different perspectives, the focus is on information and systems perspective. The BA must thus be an expert in information and in systems. (S)He has really to understand in depth the nature of information and systems. (S)He has also to understand what an organisation is and what software is (possibilities, characteristics and limitations).

The BA studies systems and environments. Detect opportunities and issues. Diagnoses the issues. And conceive solutions.

  • Architects (non-technological) are (or should be) BA’s producing architectures
  • Business Process Analyst’s are more specialised in processes.
  • Business Information Analyst’s are more specialised in information.
  • Functional Analyst’s are Analysts working on smaller scopes, better delineated problems and/or at lower level of detail.

Business analysts (BAs) use data analytics to act as an intermediary between IT and the business by reviewing processes, establishing requirements, and delivering data-driven suggestions and reports to executives and stakeholders.

BAs collaborate with company executives and users to identify ways to save time and money by making data-driven changes to processes, goods, services, software, and hardware. They must communicate such ideas while balancing them against technologically, fiscally, and functionally realistic. Depending on your role, you might use data sets to improve products, technology, equipment, software, services, or processes.

As firms attempt to enhance efficiency and minimize costs, business analytics has become an integral aspect of their operations.

In current corporate circumstances, business analysts have emerged as a major player. Some people believe that a Business Analyst’s job is to make money for the company, which isn’t always the case. However, Business Analysts’ actions and decisions indirectly impact the organization’s financial prospects.
