What does a data scientist do?

A data scientist is responsible in deriving & delivering business insights from the humongous volume and veracity of structured and unstructured data which is stored in their systems from their day to day operations. Hence, the key functionality of a data scientist is to clean the back-end data, design statistical models on top of it, link it to existing business problems, and then visualize the output in a readable and consumable format so that it could be referred by business leaders and decision makers for strategizing future plans & priorities for the business.

Data Scientists create data products. In other words, they are the engineers behind the interfaces used by human beings and machines for data. This explanation can be further broken down into five specific tasks that Data Scientists typically do on a daily basis.

  1. EXTRACTING, TRANSFORMING, AND LOADING
  2. EXPLORATORY DATA ANALYSIS
  3. DATA CLEANING
  4. MACHINE LEARNING
  5. DATA VISUALIZATION AND STORYTELLING

Data scientists work closely with business stakeholders to understand their goals and determine how data can be used to achieve those goals. They design data modeling processes, create algorithms and predictive models to extract the data the business needs.
