Depends on what you’re expecting from Cloudwatch. For server monitoring, I’ve used Datadog, Stackdriver and New Relic. Each have their own pros and cons.

Additionally Cloudwatch has features such as handling events and acting on them, such as creating backups on schedule or managing auto scaling groups based on criteria you’ve set.
