What are Meta tags and what is their importance?

To entice the browser to stop and read the specific content of your page, meta tags are used. Meta tags are snipped descriptions of the page’s content that do not appear on the page itself but only on its source code. “Meta” here stands for metadata which is basically data describing the data on the page. The following justify the importance of Meta tags:

  • They help in telling search engines what the web page is about with the help of these short content descriptors.

  • Using the appropriate set of keywords in the meta tags can help in SEO and increase traffic of a website.

  • Title tag (a type of meta tag) is the text that is primarily useful and visible to an average user. It is the text that appears on the SERP and is viewed as the title of the page. Descriptive tags can also be used to encourage users to visit a page based on the short snippets.
