Is R considered unsuitable for Big Data when compared to Python?

Neither R or Python by themselves are good for “big” data. For in-memory data, R is better than Python.

As has been pointed out, both R and Python have interfaces to proper big data tools. As such, it’s mostly rabid (and ignorant) fanboys that’ll scream at you for using R instead of Python.
