Is data science a fad? How long will it continue to grow as a field?

The question ‘how long will data science continue to grow’ is a pertinent & obvious question in the minds of students specifically due to the fact that a lot of students are already venturing into the field for a few years. Based on a survey conducted by EMC2; more than 60% of the respondents claimed that the existing talent would not be enough to meet the increasing demand of data scientist in the next 5 years.

The increasing demand is majorly fuelled by the outburst of business data which, as per IDC, would increase to 50 times by the year 2020. McKinsey claims that the United States itself would require close to 200,000 data scientists in the upcoming years. Hence, the demand & relevance of data science would only increase with time.
