How to add Reference Lines in Tableau?

A reference line in Tableau is simply a line that gets drawn on a chart that represents another measure or point of reference. Tableau Reference lines can be useful in providing context to the related chart. For example, a line showing the median will visually show the difference of each mark in the chart relative to the median.

  1. Drag Reference Line from the Analytics pane into the view.
  2. The Line option is already selected at the top of the dialog box.
  3. Select a continuous field from the Value field to use as the basis for your reference line.
  4. Select an aggregation.
  5. Select how you want to label the line.
