How secure is a job as a data scientist?

Job security is a misnomer in today’s world with the high levels of automation & technological advancements prevalent today. However, the job of a data scientist cannot be completely automated at any stage of execution. The execution of the optimal algorithms with the cleansed data can be automated; but the way to work with these algorithms or which algorithm to run in which situation – cannot be automated. Hence, it’s a symbiotic relationship which is followed here between automation engines & data scientist. In that sense, the job of a data scientist is secure till the time the individual is potent enough to do his job.

Any job is as secure as you make it.

By that I mean that if you keep your skills updated, have a positive impact on the business and work hard and smart then you will never fear going jobless again.

As you have pointed out, I expect being a data scientist in 2020 to be radically different from being one nowadays.

This observation shouldn’t be a source of fear but rather a source of excitement. As long as you keep your skills up-to-date, you shouldn’t fear the threat of going jobless.

Besides, all the jobs are constantly changing (more and more rapidly in the information age) so there is no point of fearing the change.
