COMPANY SPECIFIC
It entirely depends on how a company defines its roles, but you’re more likely to get both in Product Management than UX precisely because UX does not typically place a premium on strategy.
INTROSPECTION
-
One should ask themselves about which of the two would they prefer? What other things do they enjoy? If you can’t get both, consider which activities you’d like to prioritize.
-
In my honest opinion, much strategy is BS. I won’t name names, but the most recent example of BS strategy was HP’s WebOS strategy, which was DOA 100 days later.
-
Ask yourself what you want to be doing in 7-10 years, and then determine the best career path to get there.
WHAT IS UX?
- UX is primarily a design discipline rather than a research one. It befuddles the question.
In general, PMs make the final call. - The majority of UX departments are paralyzed and told what to do by PM. When the UX team is strong, it is out of the ordinary.
- If they truly complement each other, you will be better off pursuing both of your interests over time.
UX includes both research and strategy.
