With a lot of venom in the growth and fame of data science; looking for a government job in the field of data science should ideally not be a priority area for freshers, as the learning curve could be seriously impacted by this. The opportunities in data science come majorly from private sector since they work diversely in the fields of analytics. Governments, however, are yet to leverage the big scope that data science offers. Governments in India are decades behind the governments in US or Europe which are more tech savvy. The push for Digital India in the next decade of millennium is an example. Nevertheless, things are changing in India and little but good employment is generated in the field of Finance, scientific research and policy making.

I know a person who works as an analyst in UIDAI. UIDAI, since handles data of a billion and more citizen, it is using analytics to provide insights to NITI aayog to frame policies.

Data science has scopes in financial institutes like stock markets, insurance, banks, credit rating agencies etc. SBI is the largest bank in India and I’m sure it would be using data analytics for it’s business to prosper. Similarly, DRDO, ISRO etc might be working on classified projects that implement data analytics and machine learning.

As of now, GOI is not offering any such vacancies called data scientist.
But yes, there is a A grade job that is more or less designed for a person having interest in statistics and computer programming together.
