Search engines display your optimized title tag and a short description snippet on search result pages, so it’s very important to ensure that every page on your site has a unique title tag and has a small Meta description element added to it.

Meta tags no longer favor websites for SEO purposes because people abused them too much. The biggest culprit was the meta keywords tag, which people stuff with every irrelevant thing they find.

Meta description is important, however, as this is the description text that google searchers will see when your page is displayed in SERP (Search Engine Results Pages). Keep it short,(Between 140-170 Caharacters) keep relevant keywords as close to the left of the description as possible, and MAKE SURE that the unique keywords in your meta description can also be found in the page content itself.

At the end of the day, content is Always king. The actual text on your web pages is what matters, not the meta stuff.

MUCH more important are og metadata tags (og = Open Graph). Get them on your site immediately.
