White knights are the friendly troops charged with rescuing the target from the hands of another prospective buyer who intends to bleed it dry for a quick profit, the polar opposite of black knights.
White knights are frequently sought by corporate leaders in order to protect the firm’s core business or to negotiate better acquisition terms. The white knight may agree to perform this position in return for some benefits, such as a lower premium for taking control than would otherwise be necessary under competitive bid circumstances.
