A sub-sovereign obligation (SSO) is a type of financial obligation issued by hierarchical layers below a nation’s, country’s, or territory’s ultimate governing authority. Bonds issued by governments, provinces, cities, and municipalities to support municipal and local initiatives are an example of this type of debt.
A common example of an SSO is a municipal bond.
