A specialized business is one that employs experts to represent stocks on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Market makers on the NYSE are specialists that assist stock trades by buying and selling to and from investors, as well as holding shares of that stock when needed. Employees of the specialized firms will be interviewed by companies listed on the NYSE, who will be looking for qualified persons to represent them by holding inventories of the companies’ stocks.
Specialists in the conventional sense no longer exist. Designated Market Makers is the new name for them (DMM). As trading grew more electronic, the transition happened. Many of the orders that come into a stock would be directly handled by specialists. Almost all transactions are automated with DMMs.
