A municipal bond is a debt security issued by a state, municipality, or county to fund capital expenditures such as highways, bridges, and school buildings. They can be conceived of as loans made to local governments by investors. Municipal bonds are free from federal taxes as well as the majority of state and local taxes, making them particularly appealing to those in high tax brackets. Municipal bonds are also referred to as “muni bonds” or “muni.”
