What Is a Mortgage Pool?

A mortgage pool is a collection of mortgages held in trust for the purpose of issuing mortgage-backed securities. Some Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Ginnie Mae mortgage-backed securities are referred to as “pools.” This is the most basic type of mortgage-backed securities. They trade in the to-be-announced (TBA) forward market and are also known as “pass-throughs.”
