A mutual fund’s yearly marketing or distribution charge is known as a 12b-1 fee. The 12b-1 fee is considered an operating expenditure and is thus included in the expense ratio of a fund. It’s usually between 0.25 percent and 0.75 percent of a fund’s net assets (the maximum allowable). The charge is named after a provision of the 1940 Investment Company Act.
