The volume of data being collected in most of the companies is increasing day by day. Hence the requirement for big data engineers has definitely shot up. However, this no where decreases the importance of data scientists. Speculating from the trends, the technologies in near future will have automated most of the tasks for both data scientist as well as data engineer. However, the challenge will still remain, cleaning up the messy data, sampling the right data for ML experiments, etc. In short, both the profiles will be in demand. Being an expert of one side, and having the knowledge of the other, is what one should strive in order to progress in the career.
