How to prepare for Quantitative Ability section in CAT

  • The quantitative Ability section covers the vast portion of the CAT syllabus as the topics we cover here will also act as the basics for the DILR.
  • The topics in this section are arithmetic, geometry, number system, modern maths, algebra, trigonometry and mensuration.
  • The first important thing to do is start practising Vedic mathematics and spend a reasonable amount of time on it.
  • Devote yourself daily around 20-30 mins towards this. Get used to the calculations such as multiplication of tables from 1-30, Percentages, ratios.
  • Keep revising daily till the exam day as it will help your speed and doing fast calculations.
  • The most crucial topic in this section is Arithmetic which includes the sub-topics percentages; ratios, and mixtures; averages; profit and loss; Time, speed and distance; Simple interest and compound interest; time and work; linear and quadratic equations.
  • The following important topics will be modern math, algebra, number system, geometry and mensuration.
  • Focus on the basics of arithmetic by practising daily around 25 problems of each topic at least.
  • Chalk out your weak and strong areas and try to solve level 3 questions in your strong areas and complete up to level 2 questions in your weak areas.
  • Have a formula book write down every formula and each shortcut you use while solving the problems.
  • For basics for these arithmetic topics, you can use class 11 and 12 standard books with essential explanations.

  • Learn shortcut tips to solve your questions faster.
  • Keep the formula book and constantly add new formulas to this book for revision.
  • Learn square roots, cube roots, transformation formulas, etc. to easily solve questions.
  • Learn time-saving techniques like some question-solving tricks.
  • Learn up to 40 tables, up to 30 square roots, up to 20 cube roots, and percentages corresponding to up to 25 fractions.
  • Keep a formula book or memo for quick revisions

QA or Quantitative analysis is one of the most structured sections of the CAT. It is a most-loved section by engineers while it is one of the dreaded sections by the non-engineers.

However, with enough hard work and consistent work, it is one of the sections which can be mastered quickly.

Some basics tips for mastering the section are as follows -

  1. Make yourself comfortable with the basics of all the topics. Since CAT is speed based test with the severe need for accuracy, you have to increase your familiarity with the topics.
  2. You have to improve your calculations and increase your familiarity with the on-screen calculator, which is infamous for being very sluggish.
  3. After increasing familiarity and becoming comfortable with the section basics, practice as much as possible, attempt many mocks and focus on accuracy. With your practice, eventually, speed will pick up also. Start with easy level mocks and then slowly pick up a higher level of mocks to the day of CAT.
